Overview

The role of a professional Games Designer is possibly one of the most rewarding, most enjoyable, most varied you could imagine. However it is not, as most parents suspect, simply playing games all day. It is a multi disciplinary role, which requires real determination, skill and effort.

AIE in co-operation with veteran games development house Micro Forté, is excited to run this unique 12 week workshop for aspiring game designers. Students will be taught the theory and practice behind games design by current industry professionals. Students will be armed with the knowledge required to make a start on the pathway to being a designer in today’s multi billion dollar games industry.


What is in the course?

Games Design is one of the multi dimensional roles available in any industry; as such this course covers a large variety of applicable skills and knowledge. The course will take students through developing an initial game concept, managing and fostering the concept’s development and eventually pitching to industry.

The following areas are specifically addressed within the course:

  • Concept design
  • Mechanics design
  • Social and psychology based design
  • User interface design
  • Creative writing
  • Project management
  • Pitching, presentation and public speaking skills
  • Team work and management skills
  • Focus testing
  • Quality assurance
  • Marketing and public relations

In addition you will be exposed to Game Development professionals from all disciplines, letting you hear straight from the ‘horse’s mouth’ what is expected of a games designer in the industry today.


Who is running the course?

James Sutherland (Studio Manager, Micro Forté) and Brendon Kirk (Lead Designer, Micro Forté) will be guiding you through the course assisted at key points by other industry professionals. With over 20 years industry experience between them and having worked on critically and commercially acclaimed games such as BioShock, Fallout Tactics, Republic: The Revolution and BurnOut to name a few. They have the knowledge and the “in the trenches” experience to ensure students gain a solid foundation in game design.

When does the course run?

The course will run for 12 weeks in weekly 3 hour sessions from 6pm – 9pm on Tuesday evenings at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment in Canberra.

Tuesday 8th September 2009 – Tuesday 2nd December 2009
